barbayat: (Loki This usually works)
I am going to see the movie again. I really like it. However, there is plenty of wrong in this one. Here I do make list, which I probably expand on later on ...

The basic plot is not too bad, in fact I love that a lot of it is driven by Khan's scheming. But the resolution and some elements are really based on plot convenience and stick out ...

1) Transporters (also includes examples from the first movie)

When needed transporters can beam someone from Earth to the Klingon Homeworld, through raised shields, onto a ship at warp speed and people in free fall.

When needed transporters can not beam one person out of volcano with the ship barely 3 miles away nor can they beam away a person simply running.

2) Communications

They can phone from Quo'nos to Earth without being detected, but not if it is convenient for the plot to contact star fleet. However, it works again for Spock having a chat with himself on New Vulcan so he can gain info. (Honestly, it was more about the cameo - by all means they should have known by Khan's action that he was not to be trusted and very dangerous - so that was not even necessary)

3) Torpedoes (yes, those)

Those 72 torpedoes, which I never understood why Admiral had them all loaded on board. That was just stupid. He was using those guys to blackmail Khan, shouldn't he have kept some to himself as insurance? Then again he was a warmongering idiot - probably modeled after the more daft Republicans ...
At first, they have problems scanning let alone opening them. After all they are supposed to be both, cryo transport and super torpedo. So they make this huge point of going planet side and opening one. Carol Marcus obviously figured out how to disarm them by pure luck then ... however, it seems awfully convenient and almost impossible that they were able to remove all 72 people that fast from the torpedoes.
And those things obviously sucked as super torpedoes, since they just incapacitated Khan's ship. I think regular torpedoes cause more damage ...

4) Professional incompetence

Starfleet is run by a bunch of incompetent fools. They have no - absolutely no security whatsoever. They have the most idiotic protocols in place and they can't get shit done. Which is a continuiation from the previous movie but seriously.

The only one asking intelligent questions at the meeting is Kirk - who just like in the first movie is the only one getting something that should have at least been obvious to Pike. Here, even more people have more information than Kirk. I could excuse Marcus, but I doubt that he would have been in the room if he thought Khan would show up. But I would not put it past that guy to hope that his enemy would wipe out his fellow officers so he is the only one left in charge.

Oh more ranting about incompetence later on...
